Shark Encounter

Shark Encounter is a portfolio piece using caricature/cartoony styling to tell a small story. I drew the shark using pencil before scanning & rendering in Photoshop. I'm particularly happy with the way the water turned out.
Comments are most welcome.
Cheers, Simon

Aliens

I've always loved the Alien. I remember the first time I saw a still of the beast and feeling a real chill up the spine.
My intention in this piece was to capture the heavily piped and ribbed look of the critters in the first two movies. This is, I feel, one of the defining visual elements of the creature which was lost in the later movies as they designers made them look more organic than 'bio-mechanical'.
Comments and crits welcome.
This portfolio piece was rendered in Photoshop. WIth this piece, I made a conscious effort to create more of a background than I normally do. I'm pretty happy with the way it all went.

Alien Assassin was a pure Photoshop piece. I generally work up a pencil sketch, scan and then render in PS. I did this to see if I could do a pure Photoshop piece. I'm pretty happy with it, but comments welcome.

Laser Rifle

Laser Rifle is a rework of a concept sketch that I did about four years ago when I was working on the game 'Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel'. The original sketch can be seen in the lower right corner.
I tweaked the design a little, and rendered it with the benefit of four years Photoshop experience. I was aiming for a photorealistic rendering, didn't quite get there, but I think it's a good step on the road.
Cheers
I was aiming for a reptilian look to the critter, with a tortoise-like carapace. Comments & suggestions welcome.

Frankensteins Monster

Frankenstein's Monster started out as a pencil sketch that I did on the back of an envelope, tucked away in my sketchbook and totally forgot about.
I rediscovered the sketch during a clean out and just had to work him up to a finished state. As with my other work, this was rendered up in Photoshop. An earlier version exists that I posted on Conceptart.org but I have polished the image since then, partly due to feedback received.
Comments and suggestions very welcome.

Power Armour

This piece is a design for a Fallout-style post nuclear character in powered armour. The Armour started out as a pencil sketch of the chest and helmet, with the arm sketched in Photoshop. The rendering was also done in Photoshop.
I was trying to illustrate a workable design on the armour that would allow the body a large range of movement while still accommodating the motors such armour requires. I was also trying a lower detail, more scribbly background than I usually do.
Comments & crits most welcome.

Cyberman

With a new series of Doctor Who in production, I felt inspired to redesign one of the more popular monsters from that show.
I tried to keep elements of previous versions of the Cyberman (such as the handles and ribbing on the helmet, the external piping on the arms and the hexagonal breastplate) while incorporating some new features, such as the separate helmet that allows the head to turn. I also tried to design it as a costume that an actor had to be able to wear and move around in. To finish it off, I posed him in a nice concrete corridor in homage to the many corridor chase sequences we saw in Doctor Who =0).
The whole thing took between 10 and 12 hours.

Grey Alien Study

This is a character study of the ubiquitous Grey alien. I was just seeking to do a piece of creature concept art rather than an illustration, which is why there is no narrative and a minimal background. I'm happy with how he turned out and I hope you all like him.
